Establishing common Data Objects for critical E&P information establishes a platform for effective data management and is a logical extension to accepted industry standards such as the PPDM ‘What is a Well?’ initiative.  Beyond simply defining the attributes that logically belong with a specific Data Object, however, the real value is derived by establishing the rules for the management and quality of the data associated with each object. This would include metadata to establish the origin and history of the object, the rules for required population of the object’s attributes, and the minimum data quality standards.  This paper discusses the definition and structure of common Data Objects, along with the benefits of adopting an industry approved set for the effective management of E&P data.
